LATITUD SUR, the experience:

Although quite recent in Peru and Ecuador, LATITUD SUR counts on a solid experience in actions of international solidarity further to several projects led by its members since 1992 until our days :

Organization of an autochthonous network of health care on Shuar territory (Ecuador)
Creation and technical support for the Shuar Department of Traditional Medicine (Ecuador)
Conservation of Huichol pilgrimage places and paths (Mexico)
Zero Deforestation Action: restitution of Shiwiar and Zapara territories (Ecuador)
Solidarity Tourism in Ecuador, Peru and Mexico since 2002

LATITUD SUR, an NGO working in network :

For three years, well before its actual creation in 2007, LATITUD SUR weaved links with numerous local partners in the province of Loreto in particular :

Several botanical gardens: Centro de Investigación Kapitari, Fundación Sachamama
Instituto de Investigación de la Amazonia Peruana (IIAP)
Gobierno del Loreto, departamento de Cooperación Internacional
Dirección de Salud del Loreto (DISA)
Red de Comercialización del Cacao Silvestre (REDCOCAM)
 Organizaciones indígenas

LATITUD SUR, the means :

Fruit of a narrow collaboration with the French NGO ARUTAM and a support of the Swiss Foundation Audemars-Piguet, LATITUD SUR today manages a 22 meters long wooden boat of traditional conception, with a maximal capacity of 20 passengers and of an estimated value of 150.000 $ : the SELVA VIVA (french)

LATITUD SUR, some projects in connection with the SELVA VIVA :

Built on an innovating concept (systematic approach, work in network, interaction of the knowledge, itinerant training), our projects try to put in relation numerous local actors of different nature (local universities, research institutes, NGO, native organizations) with the aim of getting to the populations, mixed and natives, a better control of their insertion in modern society.

The initiative of LATITUD SUR joins in a global vision trying to integrate the diverse constituents of the reality of the current native communities. Among elements founders of our approach, we can quote the following ideas :

d The rate of deforestation is 17 times weaker in the Indian territories than in the rest of the Amazonia (Data ISA, Brazil 2006).

c Without a recognition of the autochthonous territories, there is no ensured future for these peoples and the preservation of their culture is uncertain.

b The rural exodus and the acculturation cannot be fought without an intensification of the autonomy and the capacity of self-management (empowerment) of the local populations.

a The development with identity allows to reconcile the new economical necessities of these populations and nature conservation.
Most of the populations of the Amazonian basin are victims of their estrangement because of the high costs of transport. By putting the SELVA VIVA in the service of solutions adapted to their vital needs, we hope to participate in the protection of the Amazonia while improving the living conditions of the local populations.

Thanks to its technical expertise, LATITUD SUR positions at the same time as a ground actor (training ship, solidarity tourism) and a project coordinator in connection with local partners and institutional financiers. It is a question in that case of rationalizing the helps which reach in Amazonia to make them more effective.
